Albania You Beauty!
This summer, we embarked on a journey that was quite different from our usual trips to Italy. Instead, we set our sights on Albania, inspired by our dear friend Zhu from Edinburgh. Zhu, who owns a charming vintage shop on the Edinburgh Meadows, hails from Tirana, the capital of Albania. With her family's extensive experience as tourist guides, we knew we were in for a treat exploring her beloved homeland.
Our initial plan was to fly directly to Tirana, but due to unforeseen air traffic control issues, we had to adapt. Instead, we flew to Corfu and took a ferry to the bustling port of Saranda in southern Albania. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed warmly, with priority given to families with young children—a great first impression.
We picked up a tiny Yaris from the port, much to our kids' dismay, and began our coastal journey. The drive was picturesque, with stunning views of blue waters and mountainous backdrops. Along the way, we encountered goats, donkeys, and cows, adding to the adventure.
Our destination was Qeparo (pronounced CHE-PAIR-ROH), where our friends awaited us. We stayed in a simple yet perfect eight-room hotel just a stone's throw from the beach. The beaches were rocky and nearly empty, with the sea as clear and turquoise as those in the Maldives.
The first few days were blissful, filled with sea dips, watermelon on the beach, and wine before dinner. We savoUred a variety of foods influenced by Greek, Italian, and local cuisine. The cheeses, Mediterranean vegetables, fresh fish, and moussaka were divine. Spinach and feta pies became our lunchtime favourite, and the kids couldn't get enough of the pizzas. Breakfast was a highlight, featuring the best honey we've ever tasted, paired with light feta and Petulla (deep-fried dough delights).
Our days were spent lounging in the sun, exploring different beaches, and indulging in delicious meals. We visited Himara, a busier beach resort with a lively promenade lined with restaurants and bars. The seafood risotto was a standout, and the kids had a blast running into the sea fully clothed.
A visit to Porto Palermo allowed us to see the historic Castle and communist-era bunkers. We dined on salad while watching boats—perhaps even one with Dua Lipa, who reportedly loves holidaying in Albania. We also drove up to the old village of Qeparo, a place with crumbling buildings yet so much life. The views of the sea and greenery were breathtaking, and it felt special to be there, witnessing the blend of old and new.
As our week in Albania came to an end, we left our friends and the not-so-beloved Yaris to continue our adventure in Greece. Watching the fires in the groves there was a sobering reminder of the challenges faced in hot climates.
Albania, with its untouched beauty and warm hospitality, left a lasting impression on us. We hope it remains a hidden gem for a little while longer, as we treasure the magic we experienced there. For now, Albania, we love you just as you are.
