Rowing Through History: Vogalonga 2025 in Venice
Share
Every year, as the late spring sun begins to shine over the Venetian lagoon, a very special event brings together thousands of rowers from around the world: the Vogalonga. This year’s edition was no exception hot, bustling, and absolutely unforgettable.
For those unfamiliar, the Vogalonga isn’t your typical race. It’s a non-competitive rowing event that celebrates Venetian maritime culture and stands in defiance of the motorboats that have long eroded Venice’s fragile canals and waterways. First launched in 1974, the Vogalonga was conceived by a group of passionate Venetians and rowers who wanted to promote rowing and preserve the beauty of Venice in a more sustainable, peaceful way.
What started as a protest has turned into one of the most beloved events on the Venetian calendar.
A Living Postcard of Boats
This year, the event once again showcased a stunning variety of boats from across Italy and far beyond. From the traditional “batela” and “pupparin” graceful boats deeply rooted in Venetian history to canoes, kayaks, and even stand-up paddleboards, the waterways came alive with vibrant movement and colour.
It was truly a sight to behold. Boats of every shape and size made their way through the 30km route, winding from the Bacino di San Marco, through the outer islands like Burano and Murano, and back into the heart of the city. Some rowers were dressed in matching club kits, others in festive costumes, and everyone shared a spirit of camaraderie and joy that felt contagious.
Heat, Hustle, and Heart
The sun was blazing, the canals were buzzing, and yet there was a sense of calm too a rhythm to the strokes and splashes that felt in harmony with the city’s ancient soul. Crowds cheered from bridges and embankments, while gondoliers waved from the sidelines, celebrating a moment when Venice belongs entirely to the rowers. It was amazing to see the fireservice in the water, wearing flippers and helmets to make sure the boats were orderly.
For many, including myself, just watching this year’s Vogalonga sparked a deep inspiration. There’s something magical about seeing so many people come together with a shared love for the water and for this unique, floating city.
A Personal Goal: Vogalonga 2026
After soaking in the energy of this year’s event, I’ve set myself a new goal: to take part in the Vogalonga next year. I’ve recently joined the local rowing club, and training has already become a fun and challenging part of my weekly routine. With a year to prepare, I’m feeling hopeful and excited to row alongside such an incredible community.
There’s no better motivation than the idea of gliding through the canals of Venice, part of a living celebration of tradition, sport, and culture.
See you on the water, Vogalonga 2026 I’m coming for you.
